Chase Roselli’s Interchangeable considers the rough chaos of Los Angeles against the rugged calm of the mountainscape that encases the city. Inspired by the everyday geometry that occurs at the intersection of metropolis and wilderness, Roselli captures the cool contours of freeway labyrinths and the cluttered grids of tightly packed housing developments, which line the base of the looming San Gabriel mountains and stoic Angeles National Forest. The shapes that are expressed are drawn spontaneously, from memories of interactions with these spaces.

Using a beveled edge to dig depth into the one-dimensional plane, these pieces playfully interfere with the viewer's field of vision. Each line is repeated methodically with slight variation as they descend into the canvas, encouraging a hypnotic plunge into the flat image.

With each viewer's unique perception of depth, a new shape is conjured, a new landscape is formed.
